Fetal alcohol syndrome: what is the fuss all about?

By: oneclickdoctor

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in fetal alcohol syndrome, a well documented permanent developmental problem. The medical community has been alerted for many years when witnessing babies that were born from mothers who drank either heavily or regularly alcohol during their pregnancy.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is marked by a baby who generally has a low birth weight but worst, a smaller brain and general developmental retardation that he will carry during the rest of his life.

It is a known fact that alcohol passes through the placenta and that whenever a pregnant woman consumes alcoholic beverages, the baby receives some amount of this alcohol. Why then would people still tell pregnant women it is acceptable to drink a little during their pregnancy? The fact is we do not know for sure what amount of alcohol is ok to drink during the pregnancy. The quantity of alcohol transferred to the baby through the placenta varies depending on many factors like the mother’s weight, the rapidity of the alcohol intake, the stage of the pregnancy, the weight of the baby, etc

If you were told that a certain product could harm you for life, how much would you take?

The answer is simple: you would not chance it and stay away from consuming any of it. The same principle applies to alcohol intake during pregnancy. Since we do not know for sure the amount of alcohol needed to cause damage to the baby, the medical profession recommends that a pregnant woman consumes no alcoholic beverages during her entire pregnancy.

The wise principle that says ”better safe than sorry” sums-up best the reason why a pregnant woman should stay away from alcohol during her entire pregnancy.

It may get difficult for a future mother to restrain herself from any alcohol consumption during her entire pregnancy. There are little tricks that can help her maintain her good resolutions. First, by telling all her friends and family that she wants to stay away from alcohol for her baby’s sake, most women will get the unconditional support from their loved ones.

Another trick to enjoy life and relax during the pregnancy is to prepare her favorite drink but without the alcohol. After all, a virgin Cesar or a Shirley Temple can be as enjoyable in good company. There are also a great variety of beer and wine without alcohol.

Another benefit from the mother-to-be of staying away from alcohol during her pregnancy is that she may experience less mood swings due to the combination of alcohol and her hormone imbalance.

No parent who love their baby would consider putting beer in their baby’s bottle, why put it in their placenta then?
