Facts On Gum Disease- Keep Your Mouth Healthy

By: Robert William Locke

How do you know if you have gum disease? How do you stop gum disease? Healthy gums should look pink and firm, not red, swollen, or tender. Another sign is of gums pulling away from teeth and bad breath that won't go away. Because gum disease is usually painless and develops slowly, a person may not be aware that the infection exists.

Gum disease is normally thought as an older person's health condition, with the advancement of the years. But it is also a younger person's problem. The basic problem is that the gum and bone which keep the teeth in place may become damaged for some reason with the result in the loss of teeth as no other option is available.

If your gum disease is serious, your dental professional may refer you to a specialist called a periodontist. In its early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis sometimes, but not always, worsens into a more severe form of periodontal disease called periodontitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist.

What causes gum disease? It is usually caused by a build up of plaque, an invisible sticky layer of germs that forms naturally on the teeth and gums. Dental plaque is home to hundreds of bacteria.. Gum disease is also one of the main causes of tooth loss among adults. This is usually exacerbated by smoking or chewing tobacco. Certain medications, eg. chemiotherapy , oral contraceptives and defective fillings together with poor fitting bridges and bad oral hygiene complete the black list.

The best preventions against gum disease are brushing twice a day, flossing daily. Regular dental cleanings every six months or at least once a year. Regular dental care is extremely important in helping to keep your mouth healthy. As bone loss increases, your teeth may lose so much support that they need to be removed to preserve the overall health of your mouth.

A recent Canadian study says that drinking red wine may help to prevent this condition but the acidic content of red wine could cause other problems. Another study showed that a compound in common antacids may help prevent gingivitis. Melatonin may promote bone formation and stimulate the body's immune response, two factors that can affect a person's gums.

Antibacterial rinses together with an antibiotic are sometimes prescribed by the dentist when gingivitis looks as if it may become periodontitis. Normally, however, toothpaste containing fluoride and a mouth wash with fluoride are sufficient to keep the gms healthy. It has to be done daily as there are so many bacteria in the mouth which, if they survive can turn to plaque and later tartar which is difficult to remove.

Keeping in good health ,not living too stressful an existence (easier said than done!), and giving up smoking are longer term strategies you can adopt to stop gum disease.
