Home | Reference & Education | Psychology The causes of facial tics still are not fully understood, but a few things are suspected of triggering or worsening the symptoms. Tics may result from some nutritional deficiencies like a lack of magnesium, but they may also very often be symptoms of other conditions such as Tourette syndrome, whose causes are most likely neurological, and, to a certain extent, genetically inherited. Stress and anxiety have also been shown to trigger and greatly increase the frequency of facial tics. Facial tics can be tough to live with especially for children. Teachers, schoolmates and sometimes even parents, may not be able to understand how tough it is to hold back the tics, especially for a long time period such as for instance a class. People will most often tell the child to "stop it", or may even mock him or her for having tics. From facial grimaces to eye blinking, tics almost always feel embarrassing and inappropriate for both children and adults. It is also toilsome when one must try to control them all the time. This obsession could make you overly self-critical and you could in turn start to lose self-confidence and to develop some type of social anxiety. It is although possible to eliminate this uneasiness and to avoid people's uncomfortable stares. There are ways to greatly diminish, and even sometimes totally cure, facial twitches, in order to find your peace of mind and enjoy a completely regular life. You may never have to worry again about facial grimaces or holding back any of these annoying twitches. Facial tics are rarely treated or, in some severe cases or if the tics are shown to be caused by Tourette syndrome, patients may be prescribed neuroleptics which are also prescribed to treat conditions like schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder or obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Such drugs were not developed to treat facial tics specifically and might not be efficient all the time. Moreover, they are well known for their many negative side effects both in the short and long run. Depression, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, weight gain and anxiety are only some of the several negative side effects which are associated with those drugs. Some of them can even aggravate tics over time! But there are however other ways of dealing with facial tics which are completely natural and free of negative side effects. Methods which use hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) have been developed specifically in order to treat facial tics. They can help you reduce them over time. In order to understand how those methods work it is important to know that tics are not an entirely physical disorder and are not completely involuntary either. They are a response to an unconscious urge to perform the movement of the tic. This desire unpleasantly builds up as you try to avoid performing the movement. These impulses also grow in both frequency and intensity when the patient feels stress or anxiety or when he is placed in certain situations. Facial tics are a way to relieve pressure when you are anxious or are in stressful conditions. This unconscious association can be treated with hypnosis and NLP, as they make it possible to modify the type of behavior your unconscious triggers when you are placed in certain situations. In severe cases, the therapist will get rid of the facial tic by suggesting the unconscious have you move your toe instead. When the toe twitches it is not visible or apparent to the people around you. Hypnosis also makes you become a lot more relaxed overall, so it is a soothing experience. It will help you get rid of both the stress and anxiety which make facial tics worse. Facial tics come in many different forms: eye blinking, nose wrinkling, squinting, mouth twitches, grunting, facial grimacing or throat clearing. If tics have physiological causes, there are very strong emotional factors too. Stress and anxiety are without a doubt the most considerable of these factors. Tics have their roots in the unconscious mind as a response to states of stress or anxiety; with NLP and self-hypnosis you will be able to modify this association. Stress and anxiety can also be effectively fought on the long term with the soothing, stress relieving techniques of hypnotherapy, which will greatly reduce the occurrence of facial tics.
