Do you know what your fetish is?

By: Clint Jhonson

Fetishism is the sexual attraction for material objects or body parts (who become a fetish or fetisch in German). The origin of this concept lies in the 18th century with Charles de Brosses’ theory about fetishism being the primary stage in the evolution of a religion and has been developed by psychologists such as Alfred Binet, Sigmund Freud and German philosopher Max Dessoir. In fact, psychoanalysis and Sigmund Freud are responsible for the common usage of the term. Like many types of sexual behavior, such as homosexuality or sadomasochism, fetishism was at first considered a disease. Today, with the liberty of choosing one’s sexual preferences, it is no longer shameful for somebody to admit that he or she has a fetish or even more of them.

Those who criticize fetishism should know that in many societies a fetish has been not only accepted but also a part of the tradition. For example, in old China, women were forced to wear special shoes that made their feet small. The Chinese obsession for small feet is a perfect example of fetisch. Even today, fetishism is part of our culture. For example, the modern Western ideal of beauty is a skinny woman with perfect breasts and long feet. Sometimes a fetish is so absorbed into a culture that we regard it as a natural sexual desire, such as sexy lingerie or women’s removal of body hair. Of course, fetishism depends of the society’s culture and habits. In the Victorian period, when women had to cover most of their body, a women’s ankle was considered very erotic. Although freedom has considerably developed in the latest centuries, in some Muslim countries women are still not allowed to show their face and most of their body. Even in the USA, the land of freedom, topless women risk to be penalized in most states, while in most European countries topless is perfectly legal. Naturally, a prohibited feature becomes more attractive and more likely to become a fetisch.

Whether we like to admit it or not, most of us have a fetish. Usually it’s about body parts that we find attractive at the opposite sex. If you have a preference for blue eyes, long hair or small/big hands, this can be considered a fetisch. It’s the same thing if you like men with beards or women with long blonde hair. The same goes for sexy lingerie or high heels (for men, mostly). Anything that brings someone pleasure is accepted. It is no longer shameful to admit one’s desires. Fetishism only becomes a problem when you become addicted of a certain thing (fetisch) and you cannot become sexually aroused in its absence.

A fetish is a personal thing and it is strongly connected with the person’s experience. Perhaps most of them are linked to pleasant memories or they come from a book or movie. Anyway, nobody should judge others’ sexual preferences. If you have sexual fantasies, this doesn’t make you a weird person; on the contrary, it shows that you have a normal sexual life. Some people choose to put their fantasies in practice, while others just dream about them. We should all be tolerant and learn to understand others before we judge them.
