Debt Consolidation: A solution?

By: Gary Wainwright

With increased mortgage repayments, household expenses, credit card bills and endless other monthly outgoings, no doubt you have been tempted by adverts telling you that a debt consolidation agreement might help you get on top of your finances.

Debt consolidation is just one of a number of solutions that might be beneficial to those struggling to balance their finances on a monthly basis. After all, if you’re working an eight-hour day the last thing you want to do with your spare time is worry about what bill to pay first or whether to make the minimum repayment or more.

A debt consolidation agreement takes all of your existing outgoings and rolls them up into one lump sum, which immediately takes away the stress of servicing multiple debts. However, it isn’t always the ideal answer to financial stress.

In signing up to a debt consolidation agreement you’re paying off all your arrears in exchange for answering to one creditor. However, when you pay off these bills there can be fees for settling the balance early which might add to the overall cost.

Calculating the interest you pay on your multiple debts is another important factor, as the wrong decision can mean you pay more for one source of credit than you were for all of your previous outgoings.

In a nutshell, debt consolidation is only as effective as the agreement you manage to secure. One way to improve the chances of obtaining a beneficial deal is to get skilled advice from a knowledgeable debt counsellor.

Many debt counsellors offer free consultations and it is highly advisable to take advantage of them. After all, what have you got to lose?
