Day 3 - Last Day of the 3 Day, 60 Mile Walk

By: Linda Baccus

There was a lot of activity at the base camp on day 3. We had to take down our tent and pack up our gear before we left the base camp for the final 17 miles.

The ocean breeze and a chance to cool off while walking along the shore in Quincy was a welcome change. It was a beautiful walk through the old neighborhoods of Boston. As we walked we had the opportunity to meet and talk to some great people. I met people from everywhere. I walked with one gentleman who was 75 years old. He was a retired electrician. His goal for 2007 is to walk all 12 of the 3 day 60 mile walks across the US. He wants more men to be aware of breast cancer. While I was walking the last day I had the opportunity to carry one of the 3 day Breast Cancer flags for about 10 miles. It really was an honor. The flag was passed from walker to walker.

As were walking and talking to other walkers I had a million dollar dream. You had the opportunity to read the information on the backs of other walker shirts as we were walking together. There were people walking as teams. They were dressed with similar shirts and hats. Some people wore shirts with names of survivors or in honor of breast cancer friends and family. I made a life changing decision. I thought it would be a grand idea to form a team of Brave Heart women from all over the US and International to walk, run, bike or whatever for all kinds of different causes. There were 1600 women at the Boston walk alone to be introduced to Brave Heart Women Global Community. I would be honored to chair the cause.

At lunch each day we took off our shoes and let our feet rest. It was a chance to change our wet socks for clean ones. My feet were very sore. Jeff had no blisters but I had blisters on both feet. I wore three different pair of shoes, but that really did not help my feet. One pair of the shoes I wore was an old pair and already worn out. They were worn out before I started. I had very little support. The one thing I learned “Make sure you wear good shoes.”

I decided it was time to visit the medical team. The medical team was excellent and they repaired my blisters. I walked much faster after I had my feet checked.

I have talked about the food that was served. It was very excellent. It was prepared and served on site. I thought for sure I would loose five pounds by walking 60 miles, but I actually gained three. It was hard for me to believe.

After lunch on the last day we only had 5 miles to the finish line. Many of the walkers who were unable to walk the entire day joined us for the last miles.

As we drew closer to the final mile at the Boston Bay Expo Center in Canton, MA, the cheers of neighbors and cars blowing their horns lifted our sprits. As we were getting closer to the final mile we walked pass the Kennedy Presidential Library.

We walked into the Expo Center as a group to the cheers of our family and friends who were waiting for us at the closing ceremony. We walked into the closing ceremony 12 across. We separated and formed a circle around the center stage. The 200 plus Breast Cancer survivors who walked with us filled in the inner circle. The closing ceremonies started where we honored the breast cancer survivors and we celebrated a job well done.. There was not a dry eye in the circle of walkers and crew.
