Common Illnesses in Cats - Get To Know What Ails Your Pet

By: Marjorie Greer

Cats get sick too but not that often. They experience some common ailments that may disrupt their health for a short period of time. Usually, having a well balanced diet as well as a thorough grooming can help alleviate these ailments and sometimes prevent it from happening. If you notice your cat to change its normal routine, going for a check up with your local veterinarian is highly suggested. It is usually one of those normal cat sicknesses although sometimes, it may be something more.

Unlike other species of animals, hair balls embody the most common disorder found in cats. It does not matter if you possess a short or a long haired feline, the hair ball still finds its way into your pet. Although more prominent in the medium to long hairs species of cat, the hairball dilemma can be diminished by combing and brushing your cat regularly. Not only does this practice generate an attractive cat but it eliminates loose hair which would otherwise end up in your "kitty's" stomach.

Adding a small quantity like a teaspoonful of fish oil to their food on a weekly basis would aid in making the swallowed dead hairs to be safely ejected with their faeces through their digestive system. Feeding cats daily with (canned) pumpkin and a little bran are also good for their general well being. Cats that do not have a long ancestral history of highly refined domestication, and who still retain some of their wild traits, get over most of their mild ailments by chewing on some types of grass and other wild plants found growing freely in untended backyards.

The biggest enemies of the cats are the fleas who create havoc in their lives by causing immense distress to them mentally and emotionally and spreading diseases apart from being itchy and allergic. Regular grooming and use of flea collars are recommended for the combat of the flea menace and their resultant ailments. There are many environmental safe powders and sprays to be applied on their furs for the control of fleas besides giving a pleasant odor to your cat. If your cat is highly infested with fleas, then you may ask your vet for some flea inoculations too.

When your cat scratches the inside of their ears, other illnesses can be present such as ear mites. They can also have wax buildup which can irritate and annoy your cat. A good thing about this is that it is easily remedied. Whenever you visit the veterinarian, they will probably notice this condition with your cat and solve it easily. They can also provide you with the necessary medications to give to your cat. Ear mites should be treated as early as possible to prevent the loss of hearing of your cat a well as affect their health.

An area of understanding which is generally ignored by most people entails the mental and emotional distress experienced by cats. Should you relocate to another home your adult feline may find it exceedingly difficult adapting to the new home. There are numerous tales involving cats running away from their new home and finding their way back to the previous domain, even though that home may be hundreds of miles away. Any cat owner will readily agree that when you have a feline you come to realize that cats have established their own rules concerning where their territory is. They tend to guard what they consider their property just as a human does theirs. Although we do not envision the creation of fences with urine and feces which are established by the cat, they do in fact respect each other's territories.

Similar to humans, cats may also experience various types of afflictions that have very subtle symptoms. Bring your cat to the vet not only for their annual check up but whenever you detect a change in their behavior such as the time they eat and if they get preoccupied with a different task. Taking care of the health of your can, even from trivial things can ensure you at least 10 years of having a healthy furry companion with you.
