Choosing Between Live or Remote Marketing Events

By: Mac McIntosh

Long ago, business relationships were forged by boarding a plane to meet face to face, or by picking up the telephone to chat one to one. However, today's technology changed that. In today's world, 'remote' events offer new kinds of events which are useful for locating and influencing potential customers. The more technical event formats have certain advantages, as they are often more convenient for both the producer and attendee. Even so, often an in-person or 'live' event is preferable. Nothing does it quite like face-to-face contact.

When deciding what type of event is best in order for you to reach your intended audience, keep these pros and cons in mind:

Remote Events such as videoconferences, webinars, and teleconferences

Pros:

- Web conferencing software allows you to archive the event, giving you another chance to reach those who aren't available for the 'live' webinar
- Attendees can invite others without an additional cost to either party; a small group can gather around a single PC to get the same message
- Lower cost, less time. This low time investment can help to attract more attendees

Cons:

- Sending a proper signal requires good equipment in excellent working order. Some potential attendees may not have the correct software to tune in with.
- Teleconferences are more easily interrupted; often an attendee is multi-tasking.

Live Events such as lunch and learns, executive briefings, and breakfast meetings

Pros:

- A live event allows you to keep the attendees' attention for a longer period
- The greatest thing about live events is the opportunity to make personal connections

Cons:

- Live events take more time, including time required to get to and from the event
- Live events are costly when considering audiovisual, staff, parking, meeting rooms, and refreshments

So, will it be a live event, or a remote one? The final decision should hinge upon several important factors, including available time and resources. The single most important factor to keep in mind is the preferences of your sales prospects. You should present the info in a way that they will want to receive it. If you are successful at this, you will increase the liklihood of having your message received and understood. Good luck!
