Home | Health & Fitness | Yoga Many of the overweight kids have fallen prey to the lack of a balanced diet that could be easily obtained with home prepared foods, but many parents are both working or have some bad eating habits or lead inactive lifestyles themselves. With the convenience of a fast food restaurant offering quick hunger fixes for a relatively small amount of money, it encourages kids and adults alike, to keep returning for their favorite SuperSize meal and motivates the franchises to be more interested in steady profits rather then healthy nutritional fast food. Fast food is a poor persons worst enemy when it comes to a healthy daily meal, since a persons hunger pangs can be relieved for under five bucks. Becoming overweight or obese is a symptom of inactivity and poor eating habits and if not prevented, the child will grow up with all of the health, employment and social issues associated with obesity, so it is important that parents take steps now before the kids need to start dieting. If parents don't lead by example and find a way to teach their children the importance of exercise and healthy eating, the chances of them forming good healthy eating and fitness habits are pretty slim. Never before has sedentary lifestyles become the norm as it is today with everything geared towards fast and easy. Fat burning type activities in the past usually involved some sort of fun sport competition, but today the parks seem to be empty because the kids are parked in front of the TV or computer. Past generations didn't have obesity problems with the physically demanding lifestyles. Only about half of the families today in the U.S. sit down as a family for meals, leaving kids to fend for themselves when it comes to making their daily food choices. Children of stay at home moms or dads have a big advantage providing they are following sensible food and activity guidelines. One bright spot is that the schools are finally beginning to realize they can play an important role in curbing the childhood obesity epidemic and have made tremendous progress in offering more healthy, nutritional foods according to the results of the 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) released October 19, 2007. What the schools are providing now can give the parents some suggestions as what to offer at home with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and less high fat foods such as deep fried potatoes. Also, An average of about 85% of schools teach nutrition education. Tips: Prepare healthy meals ahead of the school week that are full of the daily needed nutrients and elliminate all the bad food stuff such as deep fried potatoes and other high fat products. Cold whole grain cereal or oatmeal for breakfast and large salads sprinkled with whole grain and protein rich meat for dinner is one easy method and have delicious fruit for dessert. Reduce or eliminate cookies, candy cola, cake and chips, or be creative and find a recipe for whole grain desserts. The formula for maintaining a healthy weight is no different for children than it is for adults. Burn more calories than you take in and you have the best chance possible for weight control. School sports or sports outside the class room is one surefire fat burning activity, but if this isn't feesible encourage the kids to start the day with some aerobics and stretching that will counteract all the TV and computer sitting, or 10 minutes of exercise for every hour they sit. The children of today are at the mercy of the parents and adults to show them the dangers of eating poorly and all the health issues that can arise at an early age of adulthood, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even premature death. Research: One study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight as children and if being overweight begins before the age of 8 years, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.
