Charity Can Begin At Christmas

By: J Gardener

The holiday season is once again in full swing, and Christmas is just around the corner. Parents everywhere are preparing to do battle in the toy stores, or online, in order to secure for their children the specific, perfect ingredients for a wonderful Christmas morning.

If you're a mom or a dad, you know that last year's toys, no matter how well they've held up, are simply last year's toys. This year's retailers have brought a whole new crop of must-have toys and games to the market, and any child who's been near a TV has a long list of things that Santa needs to leave under the tree.

You know you want to make your child's Christmas as perfect as you can, but you also have some trepidation about always getting her the latest and greatest of everything. As much as you want to see her joy, you don't want to spoil her, either.

You might even worry about where you're going to put all of the new toys, since last year's dolls and games, and the ones from the year before, are all piled in the playroom, gathering dust. Most of them haven't been touched since last year's holiday season ended.

Realizing how much good stuff you've lavished on your child is when you acknowledge that a lot of the stuff that has sat around since last year just might make another child's Christmas incredibly happy, this year. Dozens of charitable organizations in your town would be tickled to have a small portion of your child's unused toys and dolls, to distribute to less fortunate children, this Christmas.

You may have to teach your child about the concept of charity, but, chances are, she already knows how good it feels to cause someone else to smile. And she will probably easily grasp the notion that Santa insists that she be good, if she expects goodies on Christmas morning. Helping another child to smile is definitely a way to get into Santa Claus's good graces.

Another way to convince your child of the benefits of recycling those toys she no longer wants is to tell her that Santa needs her help this year. If children like her will donate some of their gently-used toys to charity, then Santa can leave the North Pole with a lighter load on Chrismas Eve. Then, after he leaves new toys for her, he can pick up some of the gently-used toys she's donated, and deliver them to other children who want them.

And, really, by the time your daughter opens her new toys on Christmas morning, the toys she chose to donate will be long forgotten. And reminding her of her charity, and the joy she helped bring to another family, may help to instill a lifelong habit of generosity in your child.
