Can A Business On The Internet Cure Unhappiness?

By: Rich Schefren

The last time I sat down at my computer I let people know my feelings on retirement and why it's not valid anymore. A lot of people agreed with me, but many were pretty shaken up. Mainly because I burst their bubble about the secure future they had planned on for themselves. And that really goes for my readers with a business on the Internet.

I know what I just wrote sounds cold, but think about it. Could you have predicted your current situation (good or bad) 5 years ago? How about 10 years ago? Before you can predict anything, you need to have a clue about the overall context - the environment you currently operate in running a business on the Internet.

You don't have to look far to see how running a business on the Internet changes often. Tactics that worked a year ago are no longer effective because of overuse. Things that affect your business outside of the Internet won't stay the same either. Why do you think the business world is so competitive?

Your business on the Internet cannot stand up against the winds of change. Books like In Search of Excellence and Good To Great showcased businesses that were supposed to be built to last. The truth is, after many years, that most of those businesses were as sensitive to a changing world as any are today.

Hopefully you now see that the future is never written in stone. It doesn't matter how good your business on the Internet is or how many years you've been in business. And the longer you look into the future, the more dramatic the situtation can change. To the point when your future vision doesn't exist at all. Where does that put your idea of retirement now?

So when I was sharing how I fit in fun time while running a business on the Internet with GP, I wanted to find out what fun time she had. She wasn't being direct with me, instead telling me she gets to it from time to time. I knew there was no way she could do this working 7 days a week for 6 months straight.

See, many people think they make time for fun when they really don't. This is what my masseuse was doing. Then she told me the things she likes to do to have fun are things she used to do before she started working so much. She was wasting each day by working with her nose to the grindstone with no end in sight. Her work everyday was a certainty in her life that she thought would always be there. It was much more certain than the prospect of finding true happiness. This is a common situation, I hate to say. It all comes down to the fact that people generally will stick with something they are not happy doing to avoid the uncertainty of going for what they really want out of life.

Can you look yourself in the mirror and say that you're not doing the same thing as GP? If you're like many people that have a business on the Internet, you may be avoiding the uncertain. Even if it could get you what you really want in life.

So I asked GP to put together a list of 20 things she really enjoys before my appointment with her next week. What about you? Can you do it? Sadly, many of you will not be able to come up with 20 fun things you enjoy. If you can come up with even three it's a start. So take some time away from your business on the Internet and make your list today.
