British Education Levels

By: Sharon White

Generally six levels of British education system should be learnt first. The first level to be explained is NVQ (national Vocational Qualification) level. It is designed with employers and closely associated with a specific occupation. These courses are work based, industry standard qualifications which focus on workplace skills. Many students who take NVQs are already in or preparing for a particular type of work. Courses usually last one year and their graduates are assessed by showing that they have specific skills focusing on what they can do more that what they know.

A (Advanced) levels are an academic course and are the traditional route to higher level academic studies. Courses usually last two years and students typically take three A level subjects or a mix of A and AS (Advanced Subsidiary) level subjects and GNVQ (general National Vocational Qualification) units. A level requires much written work and usually have an end of course exam, some also have a coursework assessment. AS level has half the subject content of an A level and it usually lasts one year.

GNVQ (General national Vocational Qualification) level is related to an area of work and it develops vocational skills and knowledge. Courses include a mix of theory and practical work. Work related subjects are mixed with general skills, usually Communication, Information technology and Application of Number. GNVQ level can be divided into intermediate and advanced sublevels, each of them lasts one year, the whole course takes two years of study.

The new UK level approved within the 2000 Advanced Curriculum framework makes it easier to combine academic and vocational study by mixing A or AS level subjects and units of GNVQ level.
