Home | Arts & Entertainment | Visual Arts First, film festivals support the arts community. Unfortunately, the arts have become almost non-existent in some smaller towns, while other forms of entertainment have taken over. However, when an international film festival comes to town, it seems like often the community comes together to demonstrate support and some even become film festival sponsors as a means of supporting and bring back the arts in that area. The second benefit of an international film festival is that not only does that town, but many of the surrounding towns, experience valuable national exposure as "host" communities. Towns that would otherwise be unknown or lacking in interest to the average tourist, suddenly have something that draws outsiders to the area. Along those same lines, film festivals contribute significantly to local economies. With the added tourists in the area, resorts, inns, restaurants, museums, and other businesses flourish as they accommodate the needs of visitors. The final benefit of hosting an international film festival is that it attracts tourists during the off-season by offering local businesses the opportunity to serve a wider audience. Film festivals can be hosted during any time of year. However, when they are held in less popular seasons for the geographic region such as the fall or winter, which are slower in large part to the colder weather, these Ontario resort regions are able to step-up and accommodate a wider client-base despite what is typically a slower season. However, areas such as this are never lacking with activities to take part in. In addition, some resorts and cottages even promote special film festival accommodation packages for their guests. The paragraphs above have highlighted the benefits to holding film festivals in your town which include: supporting the arts community, creating valuable national exposure for their host communities, contributing significantly to local economies, and attracting tourists during the off-season by offering local businesses the opportunity to serve a wider audience.
