Maybe because we have so much pain associated with our prior experiences of being a student, most people do not relish the opportunity of going into a new arena and baring their ignorance. Somehow, a lack of knowledge is seen as a negative “verdict” about who we are, instead of as a marvelously exciting opportunity to expand our world and our capabilities. Americans, in particular, seem to be uncomfortable admitting they don’t know something! This can be very costly in many areas of life, especially in a field as unique as network marketing. Just about every single successful network marketer I know shares that a key aspect of their success has been finding, trusting, and following one or more mentors along the way. In short, they found a coach that worked for them and they allowed themselves to be coached! The relationship between student and coach is a very intimate and powerful one, and both sides need to select their commitments wisely. I guarantee you, your coach will see all your “weak spots” AND will also see great potential in you – potential you are likely to be less aware of. Ideally, your coach should both have DONE what they are coaching you to do AND they should be gifted in keeping you focused on your next key step to take, while also reminding you of the “big picture” when appropriate. Here’s a biggie … The best teachers and coaches were (and are) the most committed students! You will be able to empathize and serve your students best when you REALLY KNOW what it feels like to be in their shoes. Also, you don’t want to ask someone to do something that you are or were unwilling to do yourself. Here are some keys I have discovered over the years to being a “good” student: Select your teachers and coaches with great care. Know WHY you want to learn something. How is it going to benefit you and others? Don’t go past a word or concept you don’t understand. Study with a dictionary. Balance understanding concepts with APPLYING the concept in a real-world situation. Be willing to ask questions when you are unclear. Review material after 24 hours, one week, and again at three weeks. If you need to take notes, learn the skill of Mind Mapping (just ‘google’ that term and you’ll be on your way). Do whatever you need to do so you know if you are clear about something or not. This is a VITAL skill that will contribute to certainty along the way. Get excited when you discover an error. It is truly an opportunity to learn something new and to improve your knowledge and skills. Be willing to go through the phase of feeling uncomfortable and/or foolish. Most people will not do this and it ends up costing them high levels of certainty and hundreds of thousands of dollars! Once you learn something, demonstrate your understanding of it as quickly as possible. Then, once you can do it consistently, TEACH it to somebody else … If you want to master something, teach it. Another key point … many times there is more than one right way to do something. A principle can often be applied in many ways and in many different styles. If you are clear on the essential idea or principle, eventually you will be able to go “beyond the recipe” and discover new ways to apply it. Yet, in the beginning, don’t be afraid to follow the recipe for awhile, so that you will have a frame of reference for further evaluation. Finally, find a way to ENJOY the process. For I have a secret to tell you … The greatest teachers consider themselves eternal students and literally cherish the opportunity for endless learning.
