Are You Missing These Ingredients In Your Poker Game?

By: Henri Junttila

Misconceptions will always be present no matter what you do. Poker is not an exception. Many think poker is about a poker face or making big bluffs.

This couldn't be further from the truth. Poker is something you have to learn and put time into to become good. Anyone can do it, but it takes time.

Time is a huge part of learning anything. As you know! There are no quick fixes when it comes to becoming an expert poker player.

There's no need to get intimidated. When I learned to play poker I loved playing and learning, so it isn't like going to school and being forced to read about physics (no offence to physics lovers out there ;).

I wrote down the most important concepts. Here are the results:

1. Strategy - You might say that strategy is the most important thing in poker. How to play hands and be able to do things like bluff, value-bet and fold in proper spots. Although I think strategy is crucial, I do not think it can stand on its own. The next point illustrates why.

2. Emotional Control - If you do not use discipline in your poker game then you are missing out. This concept will make or break your success as a poker player. You can be the best hand reader in the world but if you play bad when you are running bad then you will never win.

3. Managing Your Money - You have to manage your poker bankroll so you do not go broke. If you don't have money you can't play. You are your own boss. I use the rule of 30 buy-ins for each level I play. If I play $1,000 NL I want $30,000 minimum. And this is because I am a winning poker player since 2004. If you are a novice and learning then you should have a lot more. You should begin at micro-stakes where you can afford to lose a lot without caring. Have fun and learn first.

4. Game Selection - You need to select good games to play in! There is no reason to play in a game where you are a loser when you can play in a game where you are a winner. Pretty logical, huh? :) I see many professional players play day in and out with other professionals, all because they are too lazy to select good games.

That is my simple list. If you'd like more elaborate articles you can visit my website. I hope this helps you improve your poker game. Poker doesn't have to be hard, you just need proper guidance.

Good luck at the poker tables!
