Home | Health & Fitness | Men Issues The disease was first explained in 1743 by a French surgeon named Francois de la Peyronie. It involves deformity of an erect penis, which impairs sexual intercourse, and that is the reason it is categorized as erectile dysfunction (ED) by the doctors. The symptoms of Peyronie's disease either may appear overnight or develop very slowly. These include painful erection, a bend or curve in penis during erection, inflammation under the skin of penis that develops into hardened scar tissue, and an impaired ability to obtain an erection. The exact reason for this disease is still unknown. Doctors and researchers are working on it. However, a number of theories exist. Some of these include: • Injury to the penis - Trauma to the penis from being hit or bent abnormally while erect or during intercourse may cause small tears in the tissue. It may also cause small blood vessels in the penis to rupture and bleed internally. • Autoimmune disorder - Some studies believe that Peyronie's disease is an autoimmune disorder. A man's immune system may respond abnormally and cause plaque to form in the penis • Collagen abnormality - Peyronie's disease may be caused by an abnormality in the substance that builds and remodels connective tissue i.e. collagen. • Medications – It may be a possible side effect of certain drugs. The initial treatment for this disease involves a wait-and-see approach. This is because it has been seen that the disease sometimes improves without any treatment. However, if this doesn’t work then there are other non-surgical and surgical options available as treatment of Peyronie’s disease. Article Source: http://www.articlewheel.com
