Clarity Cut Color Carat

Clarity

The clarity of the diamond is evaluated through a 10X magnified loupe. This means that even if your diamond is not flawless it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to see these flaws with a naked eye. Clarity groups are:
Flawless and internally flawless

* VVS1 VVS2 – very very slight included
* VS1 VS2 - very slight included
* SI1 SI2 - slight included
* I1 I2 I3 - included

To the naked eye it is very hard to notice inclusion till the "SI" group while as the inclusions within the "I" group are noticed even without a loupe.

Clarity is not only about appearance it will also indicate the strength of your diamond and a highly included diamond will not only be less attractive but also more vulnerable.

Cut

Cut is often confused with shape, as of 2006 the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) issues diamond certificates with a grade for the cut of the diamond for round brilliant diamonds. The cut grade may be one of the following:

* Excellent
* Very good
* Good
* Fair
* Poor

Different grading laboratories issue cut grade for different shapes of diamonds as well. To make it simple the Cut grade of the diamond assesses the cut quality for the diamond.

Cut grade incorporates the aspects of face up appearance, craftsmanship and design. Very good is usually more than enough while Poor and fair will usually have a drastic effect on the diamond appearance.

Color

The color of diamonds comes in different shades and colors. Unlike the common belief, the lack of color will make the diamond more desirable, with a colorless scale that runs from D up to Z. Fancy color diamonds are examined by the intensity and the different shades of the diamond color. Similar to the clarity scale and the weight groups, the diamond’s color also has its classified groups.

* D-F Colorless
* G-J Near colorless
* K-M Faint
* N-R Very light
* S-Z Light

A hint of yellow will be visible within the diamond in the lower grades of the color scale. The lower the color – the lower the price! The difference is hardly visible to the naked eye within a color group, so rather buy a lower color diamond within the color group!

Carat

Carat: The diamond’s weight has significant influence on the diamond’s price. Diamonds are weighted in carats and are traditionally divided into weight groups:

* 0.30-0.37ct
* 0.38-0.45ct
* 0.46-0.49ct
* 0.50-0.69ct
* 0.70-0.89ct
* 0.90-0.99ct
* 1.00-1.49ct
* 1.50-1.99ct
* 2.00-2.99ct
* 3.00-3.99ct
* 4.00-4.99ct
* 5.00-5.99ct+

The difference between the prices per carat can be over 40%!!! For example, a round 1.00 ct D VS1 would cost 25% more than a similar 0.99ct D VS1.

Off course one should also take into consideration the exact weight within the weight group. For an oversized diamond one should pay a 4-10% premium.

Important: Choosing an oversized diamond from a lower weight group is an excellent way to save money without compromising on the clarity or the color of the diamond.
