"I CAN'T DO THAT"

By: Linda Baccus

I was really surprised when I told my family and friends my husband and I were going to walk the 3-Day 60-Mile Breast Cancer walk in Boston. We walked all 60 miles.

I did not say it was going to be easy. It was fun and I had a wonderful time. I had the opportunity to meet some great people. And by the end of the walk I had more blisters on my feet than toes. It was a million dollar dream I have had for years. I decided to take action and stepped forward to be a leader.

One thing I learned is my family and friends can be negative people. Often the first thing out of their months was not “Congratulations!”, but “I COULDN’T DO THAT”. Their limiting beliefs came out of their months like angry bees from a disturbed nest.

The purpose of the walk was to raise money, not for the completion of the walk. I am sure 85% of the people reading this article could have finished the walk with a little preparation. Most people don’t achieve a mere fraction of what they are able to do because they are afraid of being a failure. Failure is closely related to behavior, outcomes, and results and it is not a personality trait.

What I learned about myself was how to express my gratitude. I was thankful I was healthy and was able to complete the walk. I was delighted I was able to raise $2200 in donations for the cause. One thing I did was to make a life changing decision to help others.

I have a million dollar dream. I chaired a mission trip to Honduras in August 2005 to El Hogar. We visited a school for kids my church has supported for 17 years. I learned while I was in Honduras I want to set up Fund Raising opportunities for El Hogar to help raise money to enlarge and rebuild the school to make it more fire proof. It is very old and the buildings are made of wood. This is a school for boys and girls that are street children. While we were visiting the kids we purchased and served the kids pizza. Some of the kids ate five and six pieces of pizza. Hot dogs and chips was another meal we served. The kids put ketchup on their hot dogs and chips and licked the plates clean.

I realized while I was in Honduras I am grateful I have bed to sleep in, food to eat three meals a day, indoor plumbing with hot showers, and a house that has windows and doors. The families in Honduras do not say “I can’t do that because I do not have …”. They live and work and love their families with what they have on their back.

After I returned from Honduras I realized that many people today are not willing to give up any of their money or comforts to help other people. They continue to do the same thing every day. They really aren’t happy. They appear to be happy on the outside. They have no million dollar dream to help change the world. But it all comes back to “I can’t do that.”

Because I have a home-based business with residual income, I can visit Honduras and stay for months at a time. I could continue to make life changing decisions and to help the less fortunate at the same time. My pay plan is set up so I can earn money while I am helping other people change their life styles.

I can do anything I set my mind to do. I will never say “I can’t do that” again.

There may be times when fear sets in and will not let go. You have to decide to give in or fight.

Some people never learn they have the power to mold and design their million dollar dream to fit their desires.
